The road has many bumps, twists, and turns. One thing I love (and sometimes dislike) is the unexpectedness of it all. But what we may think is a wrong turn ends up being the path we never thought to take. In todays email, I've included a few of those 'off the beaten path' folks and the love they share with others.
Last year, I had the great honor and privilege of being the first recipient of the Big Agnes Bob Swanson Memorial Grant. This grant is in remembrance of a true person of the outdoors, "The Tent Guy" Bob Swanson.

Women on the Road and Vanlife Diaries are teaming up to bring adventurous women and nonbinary people together in Taos, New Mexico for a kid and dog-friendly gathering. This is an opportunity for us to connect and learn from each other, partake in the outdoor activities we love, and meet the crew behind Women on the Road and Vanlife Diaries.
When I stepped out of the airport, I didn’t see her. We had been texting so I knew she was picking me up. Realizing that her RV was probably too big for the underpass, I went to the outer edge of the pickup area where the hotel shuttles and buses pick up passengers. And there she was! I excitedly waved to get her attention. Rays of desert light flickered off my blue coat warming my flagging arm.
“Welcome to New Mexico”, Alice greeted as I open the RV door, throwing my bag in the back. After hopping in, we were off.
With iconic members like John Goddard, I thought it would be an impossibility that I would EVER speak on its honorable stage. Yet, I hoped. I wished. I dreamt. And then something amazing happened. I….yes, me….was asked to speak at The Adventurers’ Club of Los Angeles.
During the 31 day solo bike trip across New Zealand, I totally Nomaded it and stayed in a number of places. I didn’t make any plans on where to stay or stop for the night. I had loose goals each day. Some mornings I made a reservation at a campground or backpacker (hostel). Some nights I just rolled in. I really winged most of it and it paid off.
